Light Earth New Build, Eildon, Scottish Borders

Light Earth Construction

The 50 square metre Study / Guest Annexe features light earth walls, made using a mix of blocks and monolithic (shuttered) clay and woodchip or straw within a timber frame, it is the first stand alone building in the UK constructed with this technique, Gaia have also secured funding from the DTI to study the techique.

Other Materials

Walls, floor and ceiling are all vapour transmissive. The walls are plastered with clay internally and externally. The all timber structure is complemented by naturally finished oak floor boards and softwood ceiling boards, floor and ceiling insulation is British sourced sheepswool. The heating is provided by hot water pipes within a clay/sand matrix in the floor and walls providing a uniquely healthy gentle radiant heating system.

The building is roofed with a planted herb and meadow mix over earth from the site.
