The
50 square metre Study / Guest Annexe features light earth walls,
made using a mix of blocks and monolithic (shuttered) clay and
woodchip or straw within a timber frame, it is the first stand
alone building in the UK constructed with this technique, Gaia
have also secured funding from the DTI to study the techique.
Other
Materials
Walls,
floor and ceiling are all vapour transmissive. The walls are
plastered with clay internally and externally. The all timber
structure is complemented by naturally finished oak floor boards
and softwood ceiling boards, floor and ceiling insulation is
British sourced sheepswool. The heating is provided by hot water
pipes within a clay/sand matrix in the floor and walls providing
a uniquely healthy gentle radiant heating system.
The building is roofed with a planted herb and meadow mix over
earth from the site.
