Recording Studio - Lochearn, Stirlingshire

Client: Simple Minds

The scheme consists of a double hexagonal plan, with acoustic requirements that avoided parallel surfaces in order to accurately control reverberation. The studio space is double height with glulam portal frames and - unusually for a recording studio - glazing to afford views across the loch. It was used as the major base for much of the band's recording over a ten year period.

This is an example of high-tech design enclosed in benign materials and with both the thermal and acoustic specification at a high performance level.

The building was also designed with future flexibility in mind, and in 2000 Gaia were commissioned by the new owner of the estate to convert the studio into a house.
