Gaia were commissioned to undertake a feasibility study into developing the top floor of this city centre teaching block occupied by the Centre for Environmental Science, and have since been commissioned to provide full architectural and project management services for the project. The first phase of the development is now complete and provides 800m2 of office and research facilities, with the proposed second phase providing a further 300m2 of office facilities.
The conversion of the existing top floor will enable the building to benefit from natural lighting and ventilation, while innovative air and water filtration methods are proposed in conjunction with a two-storey glazed atrium space that doubles as an impressive reception area with a spectacular view over the city and River Tay and beyond.
Extensive computer aided simulation was undertaken in conjunction with the Energy Systems Research Unit at the University of Strathclyde to assess the environmental performance of the buildiing as the design evolved.
Gaia also undertook a separate feasibility study funded by the Scottish Community and Householder Renewables Initiative to assess the technical and financial viability of incorporating renewable energy systems into the building.
