West Bay Harbour Re-development, Fife

Client: North Queensferry West Bay Trust

Gaia won an architectural ideas competition with a sustainable vision for the historic West Bay Harbour in the conservation village of North Queensferry. The vision aimed to put a living centre back into the village that respected its iconic setting. This would enhance community life, offer green space to locals and visitors, and thereby increase the numbers of and length of stay of tourists.

The brief asked that the developed vision be incorporated into a master plan that would provide a strategic way forward in future negotiations for leasing the site and for external funding applications.

The accommodation to be provided within the harbour site comprised a community building, café, shop, artists/craftspeople workshops, interpretation viewing platform and a substantial community garden. Retention and enhancement of the existing boat repair facilities was also to be incorporated into the master plan.

The developed master plan took its primary guidance from the historical incremental development of the village, covering the period before and after the construction of the iconic bridges. This approach indicated to the Trust that the master plan could be phased over a number of years, without adversely impacting on the existing community and business users in the area.
