Gaia was appointed to provide sustainability guidance to the client and design team of Meridian Court (a 1980's Office block in central Glasgow) to assist in the design development of the refurbishment works and the subsequent construction works and handover. The brief for the refurbishment was to ensure that stringent energy efficiency targets could be achieved and that indoor environmental conditions were conducive to health and productivity of the staff, who were to be relocated in the building from various locations.
Gaia's approach, which has evolved through a large number of projects since the early 1990's, is to offer real time guidance from project inception through to handover and beyond. This embraces project reviews, training on sustainability issues and best practice, the provision of on-going support in brief setting, benchmarking, detailing, and tender and procurement strategies.
Gaia undertook an initial review of the proposals in June 2009, and made a series of recommendations. Gaia has since worked with the design team and client to assist in reviewing the potential to incorporate these recommendations into the refurbishment of Meridian Court.
As part of the analysis of the design opportunities Gaia oversaw air tightness and smoke tests of the building. A video of the smoke test can be found at http://gaiatv.org/clients.htm
