Gaia was commissioned to assist in a Living Landmarks Lottery Application to regenerate and transform the Greater Shotts Area. The project involved a review of the landscape and cultural resources and consultation with a broad range of the social and business community.
It provided opportunity to look at the unique heritage of Shotts which sits at a central location between Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling with a view to healing the urban - rural interface with an ecology project.
Gaia invited Herbert Dreiseitl of Gaia International to work with them. One of the projects Herbert was involved with – the Emscher Park is an exemplar regeneration project driven from the landscape and industrial heritage. This approach was investigated as a means of linking this expansive resource with its neighbouring regions through art, health, nature and sports facilities in a 21st Century context of sustainable transport and resource use. It focused on healing dead but iconic industrial landmarks and transforming them into living and sustainable landmarks.
