The StudioThe Birnam Office was acquired in January 2004 to enable the business to relocate from Aberfeldy and expand to a staff of 5. Birnam is a more central location for Perthshire, close by the A9 and 20 minutes drive from Perth, Blairgowrie, Pitlochry & Aberfeldy.
The corner premises, situated opposite the Birnam Institute Arts & Community Centre, have had many different retail uses since it was built in 1859 after the Dunkeld & Birnam railway station was built. Its most recent use was as a clothing design studio and it is well suited for its use as an Architects office.
The premises were in a poor state of repair and have been extensively refurbished. Reclaimed maple floorboards have been laid over the original floor of 38mm thick pine boards, which had been damaged. The rear wall was lined with stained timber to define the space and enable new wiring & lighting to be installed. An electric storage heater was removed from in front of the original fireplace that had been boarded up and a wood-burning stove installed to avoid using peak tariff electricity.
Purpose made office desks and tables were manufactured by the wood workshop at Corbenic Camphill Community in nearby Trochry using native hardwoods purchased from Falkirk Woods.
