Woods Construction
NORTH
WOODS CONSTRUCTION LTD was founded to manage a 30ha plantation on a
continuous cover regime to produce timber for their own constructions.
Much of this is milled on the premises and expansion is under way into
further processing on the site. The woodland management is closely
dovetailed with the development of a building system suitable for
home-grown timber based on post and beam.
Bernard
Planterose, Director of NorthWoods Construction, has experience in the
management, milling, supply and application in construction of native
and home-grown timber. Combined with ecological qualification, this
breadth of experience is now in demand in its own right but also assists
in the design and marketing of ecologically sound buildings utilising
Scottish timber as their main structural material. Bernard is founding
Director of the Reforesting Scotland and editor of its Journal. The
charity was a leading pioneer to the native tree movement in Scotland in
the '80s and continues to act as an influential forum for the whole
reforestation movement in Scotland today. He is also founder of the
'Buildings of the Forest' Working Group which promotes the sustainable
use of native and Scottish timber in construction as part of the wider
promotion of native and ecologically sound woodland management.
The
design and build side of the business has developed rapidly since the
'Tree To House' collaboration was inaugurated. A group of Highland based
businesses are now able to produce an all Scottish timber house
"designed, grown, harvested, machined and fabricated within the
Highlands". The first two houses are going on site in 2000. |
