Locus
Eco-tourism Project, Aberfeldy
Background
The
Locus community development project based in Aberfeldy in Highland
Perthshire developed from an original initiative amongst local
businessmen and professionals to encourage tourism in the area
and thereby support sustainable local economic activity.
An
infrastructure of genuinely local economic and community initiatives
was prepared over a period of many years with the development
of agricultural, leisure, commercial, media and other initiatives
in place before the 'visible' end products and projects could
be established.Ultimately,
the project has fostered both a local development company and
a major green tourism initiative based on an integrated set
of interpretative loop trails which guide the visitor from an
introductory exhibition in the Tourist Information Centre on
to a series of trails where the emphasis is on present day activities
and people working amongst the scenic Perthshire Highlands.
The project overall won a 'Dynamic Places' award from Scottish
Enterprise in 2002.
