Craighalbert
Hydrotherapy Pool, Cumbernauld
Brief
The
Craighalbert Centre is the Scottish Centre for Children with
Motor Impairment, a special school for children with cerebral
palsy up to 7 years of age. The school was purpose designed
in 1991 and Gaia obtained planning consent in 1995 for a Hydrotherapy
pool. Funding was obtained from the Friends of Craighalbert
and the National Lottery and construction was completed in August
2000. A 5.6 x 10m pool was required to suit classes of up to
12 children with individual carers and an instructor. A link
corridor with a spacious changing and an observation room were
required.
Design
Materials
The
pool hall is predominantly of timber frame construction and
is well insulated with recycled cellulose, essential for maintaining
the high operating temperatures required. Heating is provided
by two gas condensing boilers.The
ceiling and three sides of the pool hall are finished with
Douglas Fir cladding. External finishes are similar to the
main school building.
