Highland Eco Centre, Ullapool
Brief
Gaia
were approached by a private client wishing to develop an exemplar
of autonomous technology and sustainable building as a demonstration
of ecological best practice in the Highlands.
Design
A combination of wind and hydro-power allow the building self sufficiency
in energy, whilst the design makes optimum use of passive solar
warmth through a curving suntrap form. A composting toilet means
independence from the sewage mains and the building employs
local and natural materials such as Scottish timber and slate,
vapour transfusive construction and healthy internal finishes.
