Design
Situated
within an area of outstanding natural beauty and on a sloping
site the 4 bedroom house is built along the contours with a
large living room at first floor looking out west over the trees
towards the sea. Bedrooms, Bathrooms and Stores are all at Ground
Floor level and an open stair allows heat to rise to the living
spaces above. A fully glazed bay allows sunlight into the centre
of the living area while a woodstove helps warm the space whenever
needed. The impact on the landscape was kept to a minimum, the
building was positioned to fit with the lie of the land and
no trees were removed to build the house and form the access.
Materials
The
largely exposed timber frame is constructed of locally sourced
Douglas Fir treated with a low toxic borax preservative. All
walls are insulated with 150mm recycled cellulose insulation
and finished externally with a combination of Larch timber cladding
and harled masonry. The floors are reclaimed pitch pine, the
roof is finished with reclaimed slates.
Non-toxic and hygroscopic paints, oils and waxes are used throughout
to benefit the indoor climate.
