Wellington Street Master Plan, Kirkwall

Requirements

Gaia were asked to prepare a master plan for Wellington Street, Kirkwall for Orkney Housing Association. This process was to involve extended stakeholder consultation and identification of funding opportunities to take account of the innovative nature of the housing anticipated.

Outputs

Proposals included a consideration of associated community facilities, a design brief which included performance targets for energy and resource use, quality of life and other indicators along with overall strategies and objectives for the site. Proposals were included to assist with evaluation of the project by the Client and other stakeholders as the process developed.Newsletters were produced to widen the general awareness of the project locally and keep those interested up to date with progress. Off site issues such as resource procurement and contract management were addressed. Housing type, range and density were considered and related to known local needs and staged development matched to local availability of labour. Climatic design and an ecological approach to landscaping and access arrangements evolved along with architectural and financial developments.
