Gaia were commissioned by Scottish Enterprise Tayside (SET) to carry out a design review of an existing design and to produce alternative proposals for a two storey (650m2) office development in Forfar.
The objective of the study was to develop conceptual ideas and outline sketch design proposals that would aim to further SET's commitment to encouraging sustainable design initiatives in the provision of commercial accommodation in the Tayside area.
Central to the design proposals are the use of cost-effective passive design strategies to allow for natural ventilation and good levels of day-lighting provision within the building. Asides from the obvious environmental benefits, the reduced reliance upon mechanical ventilation and electrical lighting - together with reduced heating loads - not only result in lower running costs and less onerous maintenance requirements, but also present savings in terms of a reduced initial capital outlay for plant and services.
